The Artist

Bodhi Mountain is a pen and ink illustrator living and working in the Finger Lakes Region of New York State.  After studying Fine Arts in college, Bodhi followed a career in commercial art and technical illustration, then industrial design and engineering – earning 8 US Patents.  Over the years, illustration remained an integral part of each career discipline.  Eventually, pen and ink illustration became the primary focus…leading to an initial emphasis on capturing the incredible scenery of the Finger Lakes Region and to the creation of Singing Creek Cards, (Bodhi lives next to a trout stream called, Sing Sing Creek)

Detail

A key hallmark of Bodhi’s work is the desire for intricate detail. When considering a new piece or subject to illustrate, the more opportunity for detail, the greater the inspiration.  Due to the precision of the particular pens that are used during the drawing process, even very small details are able to be captured and rendered in the art.  “In addition to composition, I am especially intrigued by the opportunity to delineate each and every detail within a drawing” – Bodhi

Original Illustration vs Numbered Print

An “original” illustration is the actual hand drawn piece…a one-of-a-kind collectors item that is the result of many hours of effort.  Bodhi’s original illustrations can typically take between 20 and 30 hours to complete.  Some of the more involved pieces, especially pieces with fine detail and added color can take almost 50 -60 hours to draw.  As such, prices for Bodhi’s “original” artwork can be significantly more than a numbered reprint.  A numbered reprint (featured in our online store as a Framed Print) is a limited quantity, printed reproduction of the original illustration.

What's Next?

Although Bodhi continues to focus on illustrating subjects related the Finger Lakes Region, through private commissions and personal interests, his portfolio of work is continually expanding to include other subjects and other regions as well.  “I continue to grow as an artist by doing a wide variety of work which also helps stretch me to explore different pen and ink techniques.  In addition, I am beginning to add a “touch of color” to a select few of the illustrations after the hand-drawn illustrations are scanned into the computer.  In this way, I can explore what “pops of color” look like on the reprints.” (Bodhi).

So…where does the name Bodhi Mountain come from?  Bodhi (Awakening), represents the artist’s realization that leaving the corporate world and focusing on pen and ink illustration was the right path.  Mountain (Monti) is the artist’s actual first name which translated in Italian means “Mountain”.  Since Bodhi thoroughly enjoys illustrating and is grateful for the gift of spending time in nature, the pseudonym Bodhi Mountain is a perfect way to capture the spirit of the artist and the pursuit of a craft, that both elevates understanding and hopefully…brings joy to others.
