Commissioned Illustrations

A Pen and Ink illustration, especially commissioned by you, will be able to capture your special moment, scene, or structure through a high level of precise and accurate detail, combined with the ability of the classic pen and ink style to capture the essence of your subject in a distinguished fashion.  The process will yield a finished, one of a kind work of original art that will be cherished for years and years.

In addition, because a commissioned piece of art is specifically created for you, you are ultimately in control of the vision and the final outcome.  I am merely the vehicle for reaching the final destination…your personal, one of a kind artwork!

The Process

Step 1.  The first step in the process is to have an initial conversation (via phone or email) to discuss the nature of your project.  After identifying what the particular subject and composition will be, it’s always helpful for me to understand your thoughts on specifics such as lighting, items to include (or exclude), and finished size.  While I typically offer three standard sizes (8×10 image /11×14 frame, 11×14 image/16×20 frame, 16×20 image/20×24 frame) there may be a specific size or format better suited to your needs.

Step 2.  Step 2 involves the reference material.  Typically I work from photographs.  As long as the picture is clear, I can work from your photograph.  In the absence of a good, clear existing photo, I can go to your location and take a series of photos – capturing different angles, lighting, etc. of the subject.  I will then combine the best shots and send them to you for review.  Once a particular photo is chosen, we can discuss whether you would like a traditional black and white illustration, one with a “Touch of Color”, or an illustration with full color.

Typically, especially if there is already an existing photograph, Step 1 and Step 2 take place within the same conversation – at which point I can supply you with a quote which will include price and estimated time to complete.  Of course, specific, urgent deadlines (birthdays, holidays, other special events) can usually be accommodated.

Step 3.  Once the reference picture, size, quote, and timing are settled, I can begin to work your illustration into my schedule. I use Sakura-Micon illustration pens and paper, specifically designed for pens/markers (no ink bleeding).  I will sketch-out the subject and begin the line work…then the shading.

Step 4.  Step 4 involves the “Touch of color” process (if requested).  Once the hand drawn line work and shading are completed, the original drawing is scanned to create an electronic file.  The technique of adding color is done through the use of a software paint program.  Having done many oil and acrylic color paintings over the years, the process is similar in that colors and textures can be layered and blended to reach the final result.

When completed, an electronic file of the finished illustration will be sent to you for final approval.  Once you approve, a color rendering is generated and we can make arrangements for a delivery that’s convenient for you.

The final artwork will typically be delivered framed and mated with an identification/title sticker on the back of the frame.  If the illustration includes a “Touch of Color”, the original black and white drawing will be mounted (in the back) along with the color rendering (in the front).
